Greek parliament to debate lifting immunity of assaulter lawmaker

Greek parliament is set to debate whether to revoke legislative immunity of a far-right lawmaker for attacking a rival legislator during a TV show.

Ilias Kasidiaris of the extreme-right Golden Dawn party was probed by a prosecutor with the Greek supreme court Areios Pagos for assaulting Liana Kanelli, a Communist Party lawmaker, who reacted at him after Kasidiaris splashed a glass of water on Rena Dourou of the leftist party Syriza during a live political show on private Antenna 1 channel just days before the Greek elections last year.

Kasidiaris was elected MP in the June 2012 voting which saw the Golden Dawn carving a 7 percent electoral support, a staggering boost from just 0.29 percent in 2009.

Kasidiaris, also his party's spokesperson, has pending court cases for carrying unlicensed weaponry and bodily assault.
