Kosovar President Atifete Jahjaga on Saturday said that "officially, we want Kosovo and Albania to integrate with the European Union (EU) as two independent and two sovereign states."

President Jahjaga's comments came in response to efforts to unite Kosovo and Albania as a single country.

Kreshnik Spahiu, leader of the Red and Black Alliance of Albania known for its nationalist tendency, applied to the Albanian Central Electoral Committee to request a referendum to be held for the country to unite with Kosovo.

Spahiu said, "Two Albanian states should unite in one federation" to journalists following their application to the Albanian Central Electoral Committee on Tuesday.

Stating that Albanian states should become members of the EU as a federation made up of two states, Spahiu said that their party took a step for the reunion 100 years after the ethnic division of Albania.

Kosovo celebrates the fifth anniversary of its independence in 2013.
