An Azerbaijani army officer was killed when Armenian troops opened fire, the Azerbaijani Defense Ministry said in a statement on Saturday.
Lieutenant Allahverdi Bahisli, 23, was killed in violation of a cease-fire, the statement added.
Azerbaijan and Armenia, two former Soviet republics, fought a war over the disputed region of Nagorno-Karabakh between 1988 and 1994.
The two countries signed a cease-fire in 1994 but it has been periodically disrupted by cross-border incidents.
