Azerbaijanis go to polls on Wednesday

Azerbaijani citizens are going to polls on Wednesday to elect the President for next five years. 5 millions 145 thousands Azerbaijanis will vote in 5 thousands and 491 polling stations.

Officials reported that country is completely ready for transparent and democratic elections. Meanwhile, this year, the record number of Azerbaijanis will vote outside the country while 38 polling stations completed necessary preparations in foreign services of Azerbaijan across the world.

As there are less than 24 hours to the start of the elections, Pre-election agitation campaign on the presidential election which was started on September 16 was concluded in Azerbaijan, today at 03:00 GMT.

Azerbaijan's Central Election Committee reports that there is huge interest of foreign observers to the elections in the country. Azerbaijan Presidential elections will be observed by more than 50 international organizations and 1300 neutral foreign observers.

To eliminate possible hitches during the polling process, web cameras were installed in all polling stations which allow everyone to observe stations online for 24 hours.

According to opinion polls of several independent international organizations, current President Ilham Aliyev seems to outpoint his rivals in Presidency race. Announcing its opinion poll results on September 7, well-known French Research Institute "Opinion Way" reported that about 80 percent of thousand respondents support Ilham Aliyev's candidacy in upcoming presidential elections.

Experts state that the biggest reason of Aliev's keeping so far ahead of his rivals is the economic stabilization in the country during his ruling period of last ten years. As per capita income of oil-rich Azerbaijan raised to 6000€ from 900€, the unemployment rate decreased to 6 percent from 44 percent Since 2003 when Ilham Aliev elected to the Presidency post for the first time, are considered as the reasons which strengthen Aliev's hand in elections.

Ten candidates will participate in the presidential election.

These candidates are: the Chairman of the New Azerbaijan Party, President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev, the chairman of Umid Party Igbal Aghazadeh, self-nominated candidate MP Zahid Oruj, the chairman of the United Azerbaijan Popular Front Party (UAPFP) MP Gudrat Hasanguliyev, the chairman of the Modern Musavat Party Hafiz Hajiyev, the chairman of the Azerbaijan Social Democratic Party (ASDP) Araz Alizadeh, the chairman of the National Revival Movement Party, MP Faraj Guliyev, the candidate nominated by the initiative group of voters of the 'National Council of Democratic Forces', Jamil Hasanli, the chairman of the Adalat Party, MP Ilyas Ismayilov and the chairman of the Azerbaijan Democratic Party (ADP) Sardar Jalaloglu.
