Caspian Sea to be divided

The Caspian Sea states have agreed on six points of the draft convention on the legal status of the Caspian Sea after two days of talks in Baku.

Azerbaijani Deputy Foreign Minister Khalaf Khalafov said that the division of the bottom of the Caspian Sea had been settled between a number of countries and said that the division of the surface will be discussed, saying that "the five countries have agree and that now it is now time to finalise the details".

Khalafov made the above statement today in his speech at the 39th meeting of the Ad Hoc Working Group on the legal status of the Caspian Sea. To determine the legal status of the Caspian littoral countries, Azerbaijan, Russia, Iran, Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan established working groups in the Azerbaijani capital Baku.

He said that "During the negotiations held on March 4-5, broad discussions were held on the paragraphs of the convention on the legal status of the Caspian Sea and the Astrakhan Declaration of the heads of Caspian Sea countries. The issues related to the environmental problems, use of the water of the Caspian Sea are among the agreed points.

“We hope that we will manage to complete the whole work on the convention in a short time and adopt it at the next summit in Astana,” he said.
