The 30th anniversary of the founding of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) has been celebrated at a reception held in British capital London on Friday evening.
The reception hosted by the London Representative of TRNC Oya Tuncali was held in Hyatt Regency London, with the attendance of Turkey's Ambassador in London Unal Cevikoz, Bahrain's London Ambassador Alice Thomas, Chairman of UK's All-Party Parliamentary Group for the TRNC Lord John Sharkey, Mayor of the London Borough of Southwark Councillor Abdul Mohamed, Mayor of Hammersmith & Fulham Councillor Fraces Stainton, Liberal Democrat member of the House of Lords - Baroness Meral Ece, Member of Parliament for Cities of London and Westminster Mark Fields, executives and representatives of Turkish and Turkish Cypriot associations, business people as well as many other guests.
Delivering a speech at the reception, London Representative of TRNC Tuncali stated that the decision to declare their state did not come overnight. Touching onto the long standing issue on the island, Tuncali said, "Despite the tragic events, the Turkish Cypriot people never lost hope and always remained committed to a bi-zonal, bi-communal federation. After long years of negotiations however, it is obvious that the Greek Cypriots are very reluctant to share political power and prosperity with Turkish Cypriots."
Tuncali underscored, "Putting an end to the unfair situation on the island is essential, and part of the responsibility also belongs to the international community. That is to say, the agreement will depend more on the international community's and the Greek Cypriots' attitudes than it will on ours."
"Despite all the hardship and embargoes, we have achieved a lot with huge support from motherland Turkey and constantly developed our country. We will continue to do our best and overcome the difficultiee to reach a better future" she added.
Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus was established in 1983 while attempts to reach a solution to the Cyprus dispute have been unsuccessful so far. TRNC population requests equal political rights in the island.Last Mod: 16 Kasım 2013, 10:21
