Turkish Cypriots celebrated on Friday the arrival of a British Airways jet at the Ercan airport in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC).

In is the first time the TRNC, which is only recognized by Turkey and has been subject to international embargoes for four decades, has received a non-Turkish owned airline to its official airport.

The jet was privately rented by the TRNC's Near-East University to bring famous rock band Deep Purple, who have been booked to perform a concert in the country.

Having already sent shockwaves across the country before even taking the stage, the political consequences of the band's choice of jet is already causing a stir.

The TRNC declared independence in 1983 after breaking away from the Greek Cypriot-controlled government with the help of a Turkish intervention in 1974.

Turkey, as a guarantor of the Cyprus constitution and the Turkish Cypriot people, took control of the northern half of the island in July 1974 after a coup by Geek far-right extremist group EOKA ousted the government.
