The United Nations Secretary-General's (UNSG) Special Adviser on Cyprus Alexander Downer briefed Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Friday at the UN headquarters in New York.

A statement released on the UNSG website said Downer had briefed Ban on efforts to recommence negotiations on Cyprus after Ban met with Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus President Dervis Eroglu and Greek Cypriot administration President Nikos Anastasiadis in New York in September.

The statement notes that Ban, reminding of Security Council Resolution 2114 dated July 30, 2013, “expressed concern that a continuing deadlock over a joint communiqué has hampered a return to talks.”

Ban also expressed hope that the Turkish and Greek Cypriot leaders would reach an agreement, as well as confidence in Special Adviser Downer.

Downer is scheduled to visit the island from November 4 to 8 in hopes of setting a date for the first leaders' meeting for the resumption of full-fledged negotiations.
