Russian warships and jets partake in Cyprus military drill

Russia and the Greek Cypriot administration have been increasing their cooperation in recent years, signing a number of arms deals and allowing Russian vessels to dock at the southern port of Limassol.

Russian warships and fighter jets are currently engaging in a military exercise in the waters and airspace of the Greek Cypriot administrated southern Cyprus.

The Russian “Sukhoi Su-33” fighter jets along with “Ka 27” military helicopters started conducting drills along the south and west coasts of the eastern Mediterranean island on February 6 and will continue to do so till February 20.

The “Amiral Kuznetsov” warship is also taking part in the exercises.

Russia and the Greek Cypriot administration have been increasing their cooperation in recent years, signing a number of arms deals and allowing Russian vessels to dock at the southern port of Limassol.

Russia has also grown increasingly dependent on the Limassol port since the Syrian civil war which began in 2011 put the Russian military base in the coastal city of Tartus under threat.
