Turkish Cypriot Parliament Speaker Sibel Siber has put forward her candidacy to become the fourth president of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus just hours before the deadline on Monday.
Her candidacy has been put forward after a period of internal dispute within the ruling Republican Turkish Party (CTP-BG) as to who they will back in the upcoming presidential elections in April 2015.
It was briefly speculated that the party would back former president Mehmet Ali Talat to return to office, but Talat was quick to dismiss rumors, saying he had no interest in returning to the post.
Current Prime Minister Ozkan Yorgancioglu was also tipped as a favorite to challenge for the presidency in April, but as of Monday evening he openly declared his support for Siber to run in the polls.
Should Siber be elected, she will become the first female president of the TRNC, having already served as an interim Prime Minister after the resignation of Irsen Kucuk's government last year.
