Turkish warships in the eastern Mediterranean were briefly engaged in a stand-off with a Norwegian seismic vessel that had entered into its waters near the island of Cyprus.

The Norwegian seismic vessel named Princess has been operating near Cyprus in cooperation with the Greek Cypriot authorities. In doing so, the Norwegian vessel briefly trespassed on Turkish waters on Saturday evening, Turkey’s Chief of Staff revealed.

Turkish warship Giresun Firkateyn was sent to intercept the vessel, which retreated from Turkish waters five hours later at 23:50 local time.

The Giresun Firkateyn was accompanying Turkey’s Barbaros Hayrettin Pasha seismic vessel which is permanently based in the eastern Mediterranean.
