The White House said that U.S. President Barack Obama had a good relationship with his Turkish counterpart.
Jay Carney, press secretary for the White House, told a press briefing, "the President has engaged with Turkey, has a good relationship with his counterpart there."
Asked about recent developments in the region, Carney said, "the President believes I'll just take it back to the broad principles here about what needs to happen in the overall peace process, which is that the two sides here -- I mean, the fundamental issue here is the need to resolve the dispute between the Palestinians and the Israelis, which goes back to our view that both sides need to return to direct negotiations, and that a two-state solution and a long-term peace can only be achieved through direct negotiations. I think that is what we remain focused on."
