Turkish Foreign Ministry on Tuesday said Turkey will set up a national prevention mechanism under the Optional Protocol to the UN Convention Against Torture.
Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu on Tuesday submitted to the UN Turkey's ratification paper on the Optional Protocol to the UN Convention Against Torture.
Davutoglu submitted the ratification paper to Patricia O'Brien, under-secretary-general for legal affairs and United Nations legal counsel, in a ceremony at the United Nations headquarters.
The ministry said the protocol orders for unconditional inspection of confinement places by independent international and national bodies.
The ministry also said Turkey was already a part to the European Convention Against Torture, which it said was more solid, advanced and binding the Optional Protocol.
"In this sense, by accession to the European Convention Against Torture Turkey has already accepted a far more comprehensive inspection mechanism than the optional protocol offered," the ministry said.
