Turkey hails Sudan deal with rebels

Turkey welcomed on Wednesday the signing of the Framework Agreement and Ceasefire Agreement between the Sudanese Government and the Liberation and Justice Movement (LJM).

The Turkish Foreign Ministry released a statement which said Turkey considered those agreements as steps strengthening the expectations for all the rebel groups in Darfur to participate in the peace process.

The Sudanese Government and LJM signed the two agreements in Doha on March 18, 2010.

"The fact that this step has been taken just prior to the 'International Donors Conference for the Development and Reconstruction of Darfur' co-chaired by Egypt and Turkey and organized on March 21, 2010 in Cairo has also attributed another meaning to these agreements," the ministry statement said.

The statement also said Turkey would continue to give its full support to the efforts of the United Nations and the African Union and all other parties in security a lasting peace in Darfur and in Sudan in general.

The March 21 conference raised 850 million USD for Darfur projects.
