Turkey warns Germany of turning integration into assimilation

Turkish State Minister Faruk Celik met with German Interior Minister Thomas de Maiziere in Ankara on Friday.

Celik said that Turkey and Germany had rooted and good relations, adding that millions of citizens of Turkish origin were living in Germany.

Celik said that Turkey attached importance to integration of these citizens in Germany, however, integration should not be mixed with assimilation. He added that implementations, which would turn integration into assimilation, should be avoided.

Celik said that they welcomed the initiatives to establish Islamic theology departments in universities in Germany.

Guest minister said that Turks arrived in Germany for the first time in 1961, and those Turks became a bridge between Turkey and Germany.

Stressing the importance of integration of migrants, Maiziere said that they had never considered integration as the same thing with assimilation.

Maiziere said that they wanted to train Muslim religious officials, adding that they would open theology departments at German state universities.
