Turkish Parliament Speaker Cemil Cicek said on Wednesday that wars provoke other wars but World War I established a bond of friendship between Australia and Turkey, speaking in his meeting with Australian media representatives.
Stating the the relations between the two countries is quite promising, Cicek said that despite the distance, Turkish and Australian societies feel intimate to each other and Turkish citizens in Australia and Australian Turkish citizens are like bridges between the two countries.
Cicek also said that having good relations with countries in the southeast Asia region is among the priorities of Turkish foreign policy.
Cicek stated that the year 2015 would be declared as the 'Culture Year' in both countries since it is the 100th aniversary of Canakkale War in 1915.
Australian soldiers during the World War I fought against the Ottoman Empire as British Empire's subjects in Gallipoli (Canakkale) War in western Anatolia.
There is an Australian memorial and a graveyard for fallen soldiers in Canakkale, visited by many Australians every year.
