Turkish Parliament Speaker, Mehmet Ali Sahin said that parliaments had important duties to fulfill regarding democracy, human rights and supremacy of law.

Parliaments should be further strengthened, added Sahin who attended the 3rd World Parliament Speakers' Conference in Switzerland on Monday.

Sahin said that during the conference, they assessed the role of the parliaments in managing the global economic crisis.

The conference will take place from July 19 to 21 on the premises of the United Nations Office.

The broad theme for the 2010 conference is "Parliaments in a World of Crisis: Securing Global Democratic Accountability of the Common Good".

The World Conference of Speakers of Parliament is a global summit focusing on democracy, the role of legislative institutions and their relationship with the United Nations.

The two previous conferences were held in New York in 2000 and 2005.
