Ministry of Transport says 89,189 ships passed through the straits submitted sailing lists, while 53,111 ships didn’t touch at any port.

A total of 90,421 ships passed through the Istanbul (Bosphorus) and Canakkale (Dardanelles) straits of Turkey in 2013.

Ministry of Transport, Maritime Affairs and Communications officials told AA that 89,189 ships that passed through the straits submitted sailing lists, while 53,111 ships didn’t touch at any port.

Officials said that 42,946 ships had maritime pilots, and the total weight of the ships that passed through the straits was 1.2 million gross ton.

46,532 ships passed through the Bosphorus Strait and 43,889 ships passed through Canakkale Strait.

According to figures of Coastal Security, one case of conflict, two cases of shipwrecking and one case of fire occurred on Canakkale Strait.

Besides two cases of conflict and five cases of shipwrecking happened on the Bosphorus Strait.

While Canakkale Strait was closed to traffic for only 21 hours in both ways, Bosphorus Strait was closed to the sea traffic for 222 hours in 2013.
