Greek Cypriots on February 24 elected Nikos Anastasiadis as their new leader.
On top of Anastasiadis' agenda will be the economic crisis in the Greek Cypriot administration and the Cyprus issue.
Anastasiadis will be the new interlocutor of the Troika (EU, IMF and European Central Bank) on financial assistance to the Greek Cypriot administration and will be the new Greek Cypriot leader in Cyprus talks.
Prior to the election, Anastasiadis portrayed a pro-Europe stance and argued that the economic crisis in the Greek Cypriot administration would end with the support of Europe.
Many political experts see Anastasiadis as a new hope who would help the region reach stability.
Anastasiadis is a politician who had said "yes" to the Annan Plan back in 2004.
During his election campaign, Anastasiadis argued that the Turkish Cypriots and Greek Cypriots could live together in peace on the island.
Anastasiadis may take steps to establish good relations with Turkey as he had said that Turkey's support was needed in order to find a solution to the Cypriot problem.
