World Bulletin / News Desk
The number of boats passing through the Bosporus and Çanakkale straits in the first four months of 2013 stands at 28,534.
Data released by the Ministry of Transportation, Maritime Affairs and Communications show that the average number of boats that passed through the straits daily has been calculated at 240, totaling 7,000 monthly. In terms of length, 2,815 boats were seen on the straits that were longer than 200 meters. The number of boats passing through the straits was calculated at 29,662 last year.
The sea traffic in the Bosporus strait, one of the busiest waterways in the world, poses a safety risk to İstanbul. Despite the use of the latest technology to monitor ships, the transit of huge tankers as well as the fact that hiring a maritime pilot is optional increases the possibility of accidents in the narrow passageway.Last Mod: 12 Mayıs 2013, 16:02
