Phalaenopsis, an orchid grown in the Netherlands, is the bestselling flower throughout Europe, accounting for 120 million in sales per year and 500,000-600,000 thousand euros in the total market.
The flower was one of the most important products in Europe, said Marketing and Sales official of Levoplant Mischa Groothuizen, whose family company has been producing for the last twenty years and raises 100,000 phalaenopsis a week in the Westland municipality of Netherlands.
“We are in Westland, where also the ocean is. A lot of export companies are located here. So we have connections to our markets like Turkey, Italy, Spain, Germany and France,” Groothuizen told AA.
Noting that Turkey is a growing market for such flowers, Groothuizen added Turkish customers mostly bought phalaenopsis for hotel branches, whereas Europeans used it more as gifts.
Meanwhile, Opti-Flor Creating Orchids Director Marco Hendriks expressed their hopes of further promoting the orchid type as they sent 400-500 phalaenopsis to Istanbul each week.
“About 90 percent of the phalaenopsis in Europe are made in the Netherlands. The country has the good climate to grow these plants, where agriculture in green houses is also quite strong,” Hendriks stressed.
Hendriks said Italy is their best market for phalaenopsis exports, followed by France, Germany and Russia.
