IEA chief says Turkey should engage with rising Asia not EU

President of the International Economic Association said that Turkey could not make good use of its geographical position.

Prof. Masahiko Aoki told AA correspondent that Turkey had a unique position as a bridge of civilizations and energy corridor.

Turkey showed an impressive economic performance during global economic crisis, he said.

Aoki said Turkey should not exert efforts to join the EU which has been losing power and the country has already fulfilled required arrangements. Turkey should have more cooperation with Asian economies from now on, he said.

Turkey had a sound economic performance like Brazil, Russia, India, China and Indonesia, he said.

Aoki said if Turkey makes more cooperation with emerging powers of Asia, it will be an important global power by 2020.
