Leading Indian meat processing company Allana Group plans to build a meat processing plant in Ethiopia, an Industry Ministry spokesman said Monday.
The plant will be built in Zeway town, 160km southeast of capital Addis Ababa, Melaku Taye, the ministry's corporate communications director, told Anadolu Agency on Monday.
"The company has already received 72 hectares of land [on which] to construct the plant, which will contribute… to Ethiopia's ongoing efforts to maximize benefit from its livestock, which is the largest in Africa," Taye said.
The $20-million plant, which will have the capacity to produce 75 tons of meat every day, is scheduled to start functioning by September of this year, he added.
According to Taye, Allana Group is also looking into the possibility of building two additional plants in eastern and southeastern Ethiopia.
"These areas are blessed with abundant livestock resources and are suitable for meat processing," he said.
Established in 1865, Allana Group – known in India as Allana Sons – is a major exporter of frozen halal buffalo meat, coffee, fruit and other foodstuffs.Last Mod: 01 Nisan 2014, 10:08
