Goods and container transport between Egypt and Turkey has not been affected by a recent decision by both sides to downgrade diplomatic representation, a senior Egyptian official said late Saturday.

Ports in Suez, northeast of Cairo, received 156 Turkish containers trucked from the Port of Damietta in the Nile Delta, Hassan Falah, the head of Red Sea Ports Authority, told reporters.

He said Turkish shipments would be transported later to Saudi Arabia and then to other Arab Gulf countries.

The official pointed out that container shipping transport between Egypt and Turkey is regulated by a 2011 agreement that organizes the transfer of Turkish containers to the Gulf through the Egyptian ports.

Egypt on Saturday decided to downgrade diplomatic relations with Turkey, declaring the Turkish ambassador a "persona non-grata".

Later, the Turkish Foreign Ministry announced downgrading diplomatic relations with Egypt to the level of charge d'affaires.
