Mecca will be the first city that will be lightened by solar energy.

Mecca Mayor Osama Al-Bar said 640 million dollar will be spent to lighten the city with solar energy.

Saudi Arabia is known as one of the biggest oil exporters in the world and now investing in solar energy.

Solar-powered street lighting investment will compensate itself in 20 years.

With this project to install a solar-powered street lighting system, Mecca will be the first city that will be lightened by solar energy.

"Solar Energy Project" will be jointly initiated and taken into action by Rolls-Royce, General Electric, and some Saudi companies. 20 international companies had competed for this project.

No information was given about when the project will start.
