Spain's air traffic controllers to strike mid-Aug

Spain's air traffic controllers have voted to strike in mid-August to protest against pay cuts and changes to their job conditions, their union USCA said on Tuesday.

An exact date for the start or duration of the industrial action, likely to cause chaos in the nation's airports at the height of the busy tourist season, is still to be decided.

"Every time we start talks with (state-controlled airports authority) AENA, the government pushes legislation which torpedoes the negotiation process," USCA said in a statement.

Spain's government put an end to collective bargaining talks in February after failing to reach an agreement with air traffic controllers and opened up the sector to competition from other service providers.

Air traffic controllers' relatively high salaries and short working hours have raised hackles in the Spanish media as the country applies unpalatable public sector pay cuts to ease its deficit and allay sovereign debt solvency concerns.
