Thousands of Bangladeshi workers to go to Saudi Arabia

Up to 10,000 Bangladeshis will be recruited for work in Saudi Arabia every month, Bangladesh's minister for overseas workers told reporters on Monday.

Khandker Mosharraf Hossain said the Saudi Arabian job market will be opened to Bangladeshis for the first time in six years, with most of the jobs available in households.

The new agreements, finalized while a 21-member Saudi delegation was in Bangladesh for talks, means Bangladeshi workers will only have to pay a fee of 20,000 Taka ($250) for passports and other processing costs, while all other costs will be handled by the employer.

Hossain said they are yet to finalize the wages for the workers.

On Feb. 1 the Saudi jobs market, previously one of the top destinations for Bangladeshi workers, was re-opened to Bangladeshi manpower.

Close to 2 million overseas Bangladeshi workers send billions of dollars in remittances to their home country every year.
