The Ministry of Finance erased up to 90 percent of the tax debts and fines of 87 large corporations, according to data from the Court of Accounts in 2011, the Taraf daily reported on Monday. The report said the ministry reduced the TL 136 million tax debt of Elecktromed to TL 6 million.
At the same time, the majority of the TL 2.5 billion tax-related fees owed by 87 companies were also forgiven, of which TL 1.4 billion was made up of tax debts while TL 1.1 billion consisted of fines.
According to the report, the Court of Accounts found out about the situation and asked for the data from the Revenues Administration (GİB) operating under ministry; however, it refused to provide any information, stating that it was a “business secret.” At that time, the ministry had only canceled 40 percent of the tax debts of 117,000 small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs).
