Turkish State Minister for foreign trade Zafer Caglayan said Wednesday that Turkey and the United States were two allies and the Turks were pleased with a strategic partnership of 50 years with the U.S..
Speaking at an Istanbul conference, Caglayan said that he felt difficulty in explaining low trade figures with the ally U.S. despite an alliance of over half a century.
Turkey imports U.S. goods worth 8.5 billion USD while the U.S. imports Turkish goods worth only 3.2 billion USD per year. We want to increase our trade figures with the U.S., Caglayan underlined.
Reminding that he would travel to the U.S. on October 17, Caglayan said that meetings would take place in the U.S. based on 'model partnership'.
We will create a business delegation that includes two ministers from each country, Caglayan said.
The first issue we will discuss is eradication of the obstacles for more trade with the U.S.. The second issue has to do with increasing mutual investments while the third issue on our agenda will be the cooperation of Turkish and U.S. businessmen in third countries, Caglayan stressed.
We are in the process of establishing a business council with the U.S.. There will be 12 Turkish and 12 U.S. businesspeople in this business council. They will conduct important meetings to develop Turkish-U.S. commercial relations, Caglayan also said.
