Turkey, Turkmenistan increase gas trade cooperation

World Bulletin / News Desk

Turkish private company Atagaz and Turkmenistan's state-owned Turkmengaz have signed a framework agreement for a natural gas deal Friday during Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's visit to Turkmen capital Ashgabat.

No further details about the agreement have been released.

Ankara may have an important role in delivering Turkmen gas into the European market, if, indeed, the country were to begin gas exports to Turkey.

Turkmenistan boasts the sixth largest natural gas reserves in the world, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA).

The country was the second largest dry natural gas producer in Eurasia, behind Russia, in 2012, according to the U.S. agency.
