Unemployment rate decreased 1.6 points down at 9.4 percent in May 2011, Turkey's statistics authority, TurkStat, said Monday.
The number of jobless decreased to 2,550 thousand people from 2,846 thousand in may 2010, and the number of the employed increased to 24,450 thousand people from 23,055 thousand in May 2010.
The unemployment rate in urban areas was 11.6 percent and it was 5.4 percent in the rural areas.
The unemployment rate dropped 2.1 points to 9.9 percent in April 2011 when compared to April 2010.
Labour force participation rate increased by 1.1 points (LFPR) to 50.5 percent in April May.
LFPR was 72 percent with 0.8 point rise for men and it was 29.8 percent with 1.4 point rise for women in April 2011 when compared to April 2010.
As for the distribution of labour force by education and age group; 16.6 percent of the total labour force was comprised of persons within the 15-24 age group. LFPR of persons having education below high school was 70.1 percent for men while it was 25.3 percent for women. LFPR of persons with higher education was 85.4 percent for men, while it was 70.8 percent for women.
Youth unemployment was down at 17.5 percent by 2.3 points or 296 thousand people to 2,550 thousand.
Work force under no social security was 42.7 percent that marked a 0.9 percent decrease over the same period a year earlier.
