Turkey's unemployment rate decreased by 2.6 points to 11 percent in May 2010 period over to May 2009.

Turkish Board of Statistics, TurkStat, announced on Monday labor force figures for May 2010 period (April, May, June).

The number of unemployed people dropped 536,000 to 2,846,000 in May period.

The unemployment rate was 13.6 percent in May 2009.

The number of employed people increased by 1.6 million in May 2010 over to May 2009.
Turkish Board of Statistics, TurkStat, announced on Monday labor force figures for May 2010 period (April, May, June).

Accordingly, non-institutional population increased by 804 thousand to reach 71.23 million while non-institutional working age population rose by 856 thousand to reach 52.43 million.

In May 2010, labor force participation rate was calculated as 49.4 percent with a 1.2 percent increase over the same period previous year. And the unemployment rate fell 2.6 points to 11 percent.

According to the data, 16.9 percent of the total labor force was comprised of people within the 15-24 age group. Labor force participation rate of people with education level below high school was 69.3 percent for male and 24.6 percent for female while labor force participation rate of people with higher education was 84.6 percent for male and 70.4 percent for female.

Number of employed people increased by 1.6 million to reach 23.05 million in May. Agricultural employment increased by 423 thousand people and non-agricultural employment rose by 1.17 million people.

Total public sector employment was 2.95 million in the same period. Unemployment rate was 3.1 percent in urban areas with a 3.1 point decrease and 6.4 percent in rural areas with a 1.4 point decrease.
