Turkish, Azeri, Turkmen energy ministers meet in Istanbul

Turkish Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Taner Yildiz said Wednesday technical delegations would come together to establish connections between platforms in regions where there were no border problems at the Caspian Sea.

Yildiz met with the Azerbaijani Minister of Industry and Energy Natiq Aliyev and Turkmen Minister of Oil and Gas Industry and Mineral Resources Bayramgeldi Nedirow in the Turkey-Azerbaijan-Turkmenistan energy ministers' meeting which took place on Wednesday on the sidelines of the summit meeting of heads of state and government of the Turkish Speaking Countries which will take place in Istanbul on September 16.

Speaking to reporters at the beginning of Wednesday's meeting, Minister Yildiz said that "in the triangle involving the three countries, we have developed the projects of Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan crude oil pipeline, Baku-Tbilisi-Erzurum natural gas pipeline and natural gas pipeline crossing over the Caspian Sea. The first two projects have been realized so far".

The natural gas pipeline project crossing over the Caspian Sea could not yet be realized due to certain reasons. As such, the east-west energy project could not be fully implemented, Yildiz said.

On the other hand, new projects, such as the Nabucco, have been developed in the region. We believe that an agreement to support the (Nabucco) project would be signed in October, Yildiz stressed.

Making comments after today's meeting ended, Yildiz said that the issues of Caspian region, natural gas pipelines and energy projects that could be implemented were discussed.

We did not handle the issue of the status of Caspian Sea and border problems between Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan. We talked about establishing connections between platforms in regions where there were no border problems at the Caspian Sea. We have agreed on forming technical delegations regarding the matter. We will later discuss the matter at the level of ministers, Yildiz said.

We have stated that we may want to purchase natural gas extracted in Turkmenistan at the Caspian Sea coastline, Yildiz also said.

"Energy links"

Aliyev said that they paid high importance to cooperation with Turkey in the energy field.

The Baku-Tbilisi-Erzurum natural gas pipeline united the economies of Turkey and Azerbaijan and we are working to promote such cooperation, Aliyev said.

Azerbaijan makes huge investments in Turkey. We are working so that Azerbaijan makes more investments in Turkey. We are working on establishing electrical energy connection between Azerbaijan, Georgia and Turkey. We pay high importance to carrying Turkmen natural gas to Europe via the Caspian Sea and Azerbaijan. This project must be realized soon, Aliyev also said.
