Thirteen people have died after severe storms caused flash flooding across wide stretches of southwest France overnight, sweeping away vehicles and swamping homes, the interior ministry's rescue service said Monday.

A previous toll put the number of deaths at seven from the flooding, which swelled some rivers to their highest levels in more than a century and cut off access to many areas near the city of Carcassonne.
