A fire broke out in a house in Mannheim, the southwestern part of Germany, overnight killing three children who are Bulgarian citizens of Turkish origin, said Dieter Klumpp, a spokesperson for the Mannheim police department.

The Ivankova family with three children, identified as Husniye (7), Beyhan (5) and Halid (1,5), died of carbon monoxide gas. Two of the children died at the scene and one died in hospital.

Klumpp said a police officer and five neighborhood residents were also affected by smoke and received first aid from medics.

He added that the mother of the children, Emine Ivankova, 26 was separated from her husband, and was not home at the time of the incident.

The cause of the fire has not been identified yet, although a preliminary investigation suggests an electrical failure or malfunction.

Authorities have said that they will be sharing their findings at a press conference later in the day.
