World Bulletin/News Desk

Heavy rains have left five people dead in the south of France between Friday evening and Saturday morning.

A 50-year-old man was found dead in his car in the southern Le Gard region, early on Saturday morning, downstream from the bridge he had been crossing, according to local authorities.

On Friday evening, a mother and her 4-year-old son were killed in the foothills of the Cevennes Mountains after their car was swept off a bridge by floods.

The father managed to escape from the vehicle. Their second baby was found dead later on Saturday.

Another man was swept away while he was driving his car on the mountainside, Friday night in Lozere.

Local authorities of Le Gard region said the situation in their area was safer than in neighboring regions, which have been battered by heavy rainfall for days.

Four neighboring departments are under "orange" flood alerts - the second-highest flood warning level- on Saturday.
