English Defence League founder jailed for 18 months

World Bulletin / News Desk

The founder of the English Defense League (EDL), Tommy Robinson, has been jailed for 18 months for mortgage fraud.

He established the far-right anti-Muslim group in 2009, which has stage a number of violent and provocative protests against the British Muslim community since.

He did however leave the group in late 2013, claiming that far-right extremists had hijacked the group, deciding instead to work with the Quilliam Foundation in his bid to fight extremism on both sides.

Calling the court’s decision a "complete stitch-up" on his Twitter account, he bid his followers farewell by saying that he’ll be seeing them in 18 months.

His lawyer Charles Sherrard, however, raised his concerns, saying that Robinson’s life would be in danger in prison from former followers he may have alienated in the past.

He also claimed that Somali Al-Shabaab affiliates had placed Robinson’s name on a hit list and that if put in prison Robinson may be assassinated.
