World Bulletin/News Desk

Abusing the growing technological capabilities for electronic mass surveillance may undermine or even destroy democracy, European ministers responsible for “media and information society” declared on Friday.

Ministers responsible for “media and information society” from the 47 European Council member states met in Serbian capital Belgrade to discuss freedom of expression and internet freedom in Europe.

In the conference, Turkey was represented by Deputy Prime Minister Bulent Arinc.

The ministers signed a joint press release calling for effective safeguards against electronic mass surveillance in an age of growing technological capabilities.

The final press release was signed by a majority vote despite drawbacks expressed by Russia and UK.

The ministers warned that abusing electronic mass surveillance may undermine or even destroy democracy.

They also noted that “Any data collection or surveillance for the protection of national security must be done in compliance with human rights requirements”.

It was emphasized that, concerning the growth of hate speech in Europe, action both at national and international levels are needed.
