One of the seven FIFA officials detained last May in Switzerland has been extradited to the U.S. to face corruption charges, the Swiss Federal Office of Justice (FOJ) said Thursday.
The suspect was “handed over to a three-man U.S. police escort in Zurich who accompanied him on the flight to New York," the FOJ said in a statement.
The person concerned wished not to be named at the moment, the FOJ added.
The FIFA officials were arrested on May 27 following a request from the U.S., and detained pending extradition. The corruption case has sent shockwaves across the world, forcing longtime FIFA head Sepp Blatter to announce his resignation four days after being re-elected on May 29.
FIFA’s executive committee will meet on July 20 to set a date for its congress to elect a new president.
