French police forces on Monday dispersed a sit-in staged by some Egyptians inside the Egyptian consulate in Paris.

"A number of Egyptians had staged a sit-in inside the consulate and disrupted its daily activities," the Egyptian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

French police intervened to clear the protesters after they had refused to end their protest, the ministry said.

According to the statement, the protesters had sought to disrupt preparations for a public referendum on a revised version of the 2012 constitution, which was suspended when the army ousted elected president Mohamed Morsi on July 3.

Egyptian expatriates will start voting in the referendum on January 8 through 12.

As many as 680,000 Egyptian expatriates worldwide are eligible to vote, according to the election commission.

The pro-democracy National Alliance for the Defense of Legitimacy has called for boycotting the referendum, which will be held inside Egypt on January 14 and 15.

The referendum is the first step in an army-imposed roadmap for post-Morsi political transition, which also includes fresh parliamentary and presidential elections.
