An armed man who earlier took several hostages at a post office northwest of Paris on Friday has surrendered with no one hurt, a French police official told Reuters.

The man equipped with a military weapon took an unconfirmed number of hostages at the post office in the town of Colombes, just outside the capital.

Local Socialist MP Alexis Bachelay said the man had staged an "armed robbery" while France Info reported the man was "mentally unstable" and acting in the aftermath of a "failed relationship".

A police security cordon was set up around the scene in the Hauts-de-Seine department northwest of Paris, while a helicopter flew overhead.

Police said the man was known to them and had been in contact, and the incident was not "terror-related".

The incident comes as Frances remains shaken and on alert following last week's attacks on the Paris headquarters of satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo and shootings at a kosher supermarket in which 17 people were killed.
