Georgian Interior Ministry units have sealed off a gorge near the border with Russia's Dagestan where an armed group was detected on Tuesday, the Novosti-Georgia news agency reported on Wednesday, citing local law enforcement.

"Police have blocked the gorge. All measures to ensure the security of locals have been taken,” it said..

Earlier police had been searching for five young people from a village in the area believed to have been kidnapped. The five were found on the evening of August 28 and were taken to police headquarters in Kakheti province.

Residents of the village, Lapanquri, said that 20 Interior Ministry and military vehicles passed through on Tuesday evening headed for the border.

There was no information concerning any casualties in the operation, the information agency said.
