Germany's Interior Minister Hans Peter Friedrich has opposed to dual citizenship which is widely granted to immigrants in other European countries.

Friedrich criticised opposition Social Democrats' attempt to implement dual citizenship. Friedrich of the CDU -Christian Social Union- said on ZDF, dual citizenship was a practice that "delayed integration" adding "Whoever has grown up in this country must decide whether he/she wants to stay here as a German citizen."

Prime Minister of North Rhine Westphalia state Armin Laschet who is from the federal Chancellor Angela Merkel's Christian Democratic Party (CDU) and Federal Justice Minister Sabine Leutheusser Schnarrenberger of FDP had spoken positively on dual citizenship.

A person who was born in Germany but who carries the citizenship of a country outside EU must decide to have German citizenship instead of the previous country at the age of 23.
