Germany’s Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier has warned Russia against any further military move into the eastern regions of Ukraine.

“If Russia goes beyond Crimea, in Europe we will decide upon drastic measures, even if we will face economic disadvantages as a result of these measures,” Steinmeier told German weekly Welt am Sonntag during his visit to Ukraine.

Steinmeier has sharpened his criticism of Russia for its annexation of Crimea and has expressed concern for the expansion of the crisis urging Moscow to refrain from steps that could further escalate the situation.

“We cannot ignore the fact that Russia, with its actions in Crimea, has disregarded the central, fundamental elements of the European peace order,” Steinmeier added.

The foreign minister concluded saying “I have grave concerns that the illegal attempt to correct internationally recognized borders in our European neighborhood, 25 years after the end of the Cold War, could open Pandora's box."

Germany's foreign minister visited the Ukrainian capital Kiev assuring its interim government of further support for the country's political and economic stabilization. He also visited the eastern city of Donetsk which has witnessed many pro-Russian protests in recent weeks.
