Germany's international football star Mesut Ozil has denied earlier reports that he gave his World Cup bonus money to the children of Gaza and instead said he was donating the money to fund sick children in Brazil to undergo surgery.
The Arsenal FC midfielder, who is of Turkish origin and often begins his matches by reciting the Qur'an, was rumored to have donated his money to help the children of Gaza as they struggle to survive under heavy bombardment by the Israeli airforce.
Speaking to the The Independent, Ozil's representative Roland Eitel confirmed that he had not donated his money to Gaza, but had instead given it to sick children in Brazil to undergo surgery.
Ozil later wrote on his official Facebook page:
“Prior to the #WorldCup I supported the surgery of eleven sick children. Since the victory of the #WorldCup is not only due to eleven players but to our whole team, I will now raise the number to 23. This is my personal thank-you for the hospitality of the people of Brazil. #Bigshoe #Brasil2014”.Last Mod: 17 Temmuz 2014, 13:23
