Italy rescues 500 migrants from Mediterranean

133 children are among 500 migrants who were rescued from the Mediterranean Sea by the Italian navy after their boat was stranded near Sicily on Tuesday.

Originally spotted on Monday, rescue efforts were delayed by poor weather. A nearby merchant vessel helped until the operation could be carried out.

The group of migrants, which included 64 women, is the latest arrival of 36,000 migrants who have arrived on the shores of Italy this year alone.

Many of the migrants come from Eritrea, Somalia and Syria and attempt to set sail from Libya.

Every year, hundreds of migrants drown in the Mediterranean attempting to enter Europe, with around 400 drowning in two shipwrecks in October last year.

Italy has called on the EU to help deal with the crisis, threatening to release the migrants into Europe if no help comes.
