The UK capital London will receive its first delivery of water-cannon vehicles next week, the German federal police confirmed on Friday.

"Contract negotiations have been completed, and the water cannons will be dispatched to London next week," a spokesperson for the German police said.

A deal for the vehicles, which had been pruchased second-hand from the German police, was completed with the approval of London major Boris Johnson before home secretary Theresa May could decide on whether or not to authorise their use.

Johnson decided to buy the machines for £218,000 for possible use this summer to tackle potential disorder.

Although, the machines have been used frequently in Northern Ireland, they have never on the British mainland.

"These are an operational police asset and their movement is subject to security considerations. Before they are ready to be deployed a number of modifications need to be made. These include the fitting of CCTV and adaptations to bring them into line with the standards used in Northern Ireland. This is expected to take a number of weeks," the mayoral office said in a statement.

However, London's Metropolitan police said the water-cannon would not be used unless the home secretary authorised their use.
