Russia has launched a series of land, air and sea military exercises from its Baltic enclave of Kaliningrad.
The drills come as NATO forces also up their presence in the Baltic region in response to increasing tensions in Ukraine and the annexation of Crimea by Russia.
Marines, paratroopers and long-range bombers are all taking part in the exercises as the region trembles in fear of an advancing Russia deploying a similar method of stirring pro-Russian uprisings in countries like Poland, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania.
Su-34 fighter-bombers and Mi-24 assault helicopters will be provided by the air force as well as supersonic Tu-22M3 long-range strategic maritime strike bombers.
“We conduct military training simultaneously with the international war games that have started in Europe, Saber Strike-2014 and BALTOPS-2014,” the ministry’s press service said in a statement.
“All-arms naval groups will maintain border and sea communication defense, and will perform training to search and destroy hypothetical aggressor’s submarines and combat ships,” the ministry told the RBC news outlet.
According to Russia Today, the Defense Ministry also noted that the force in the Kaliningrad Region is comparable with NATO’s forces.
NATO is participating in the Saber Strike-2014 drill which started on June 9 and will run till the 20th, as well as the sea-based BALTOPS-2014 training exercise which stated on June 6 and will finish on the 21st.Last Mod: 10 Haziran 2014, 23:54
