Spain has made a controversial move by approving plans for oil exploration expeditions near the Canary Islands, much to the displeasure of environmental activists.
Calling the permitting of oil exploration by the Repsol firm "unjustifiable", a joint statement by a coalition of environmentalists said that exploration "poses a serious threat to the environment and to the islands' main economic activity."
They also cited concerns over marine life in the area, which could be put under threat by seismic surveys and oil spills.
However, Spain's environmental ministry said that it has "issued a favourable environment impact statement" supporting exploration 60 kilometres from the shores of the archipelago.Last Mod: 30 Mayıs 2014, 17:09
