Swedish Foreign Minister Carl Bildt’s tribute to former Israeli prime minister Ariel Sharon stating that “Ariel Sharon was a great leader of Israel. A brilliant military commander” drew the reaction of ministers from the opposition Left Party and Green Party.

After Sharon's death on Saturday, Bildt posted on Twitter: "Ariel Sharon was a great leader of Israel. A brilliant military commander, but also a wise statesman seeing the necessity of peace."

Bildt’s praise of Sharon drew lots of reactions instantly.

Sweden’s Green Party group deputy chairman Mehmet Kaplan said that Sharon was indirectly responsible for the slaughter of Palestinians at the Sabra and Shatila refugee camps in 1982 and that Bildt’s comment on his death is a huge tragedy.

Sweden’s Left Party minister and foreign affairs spokesperson Hans Linde stated that Bildt’s positive words on Sharon are striking and provocative.

He said that Bildt praised and congratulated the person responsible for the massacre of Palestinians.

Noting that Sharon tried to remove all Palestinians from the West Bank, Linde said Bildt’s statement damages Sweden.

Reminding that Ariel Sharon was Israel's defense minister at that time, Linde noted Israel had carried out the massacre of Palestinian refugees in camps in Lebanon.

Sharon died at age of 85 on Saturday at Tel Hashomer hospital where he spent the last eight years in coma.

Sharon slipped into a coma after a cerebral hemorrhage in 2006. Sharon was diagnosed with a renal failure last month after his condition deteriorated and he was being kept in intensive care unit.
